A Great Commercial...

The fact that this followed a commercial for The Olive Garden where three women cooed like cattle about soup, salad, and breadsticks makes me feel a little better about mass media's opinion of women...

Maybe the perfect food...

From The Food Network....
Every time I make this, it gets better. This was tonight's iteration. I'll often serve it with some whole wheat crusty bread. Other people have subbed in grilled chicken breast for the chick peas - I don't do that. I like it as a vegan meal. The only one I think I make.

Moroccan Spiced Chickpea Soup

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 large onion, medium diced
6 to 8 cloves garlic, pressed
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1/8 teaspoon cayenne pepper (I user 1/2 teaspoon)
1 heaping teaspoon sweet paprika
2 (14.5-ounce) can chopped tomatoes (I use stewed tomatoes)
3 (15-ounce) cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed well
1 quart vegetable broth or reduced-sodium chicken broth (I use veggie broth)
1 teaspoon sugar
Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1 (5-ounce) package pre-washed baby spinach

Heat olive oil in a large pot over medium-high heat. Add onion and garlic and saute until the onions begin to turn translucent; lower heat if browning starts to occur. Add spices and saute a minute or so. Add tomatoes, chickpeas, broth, and sugar. Season with a couple pinches of salt and 10 grinds fresh pepper. Stir well. Chickpeas should be just covered with liquid. If level is shy, add some water so the chickpeas are just covered.
Bring to a simmer, then lower heat to low and gently simmer for 45 minutes.

Remove soup from heat. Use a potato masher to mash up some of the chickpeas right in the pot. Stir in the spinach and let heat through until wilted, just a couple minutes.
Season again, to taste, with salt and pepper.

Richard Simmons Out-Creeps Himself on Kimmel

Richard Simmons Out-Creeps Himself on Kimmel: "

RICHSIMMKIMM.jpgLast night, in honor of Jimmy Kimmel’s 1000th Show, Jimmy got a very special visit from every elderly person’s favorite slim gay guy, Richard Simmons. But what you thought was going to be an ‘I’m F**king Richard Simmons’ redux ended up being something far, far more disturbing: Simmons trying to get Kimmel to lose some of his Man Show weight. That might not seem too scarring, but running Simmons voice through an exorcism machine, seeing Kimmel pushed around in a shopping cart like an adult baby, and the last minute of footage, which we dare not spoil… well, let’s just say we longed for those carefree days of Ben Affleck in daisy dukes.

To his credit, it is handily the most surreal viral video of 2008, and strangely, with all of its nightmarish quirks, a pleasure to view.

It’s after the jump.
